Crossing the bridge: the sound of Istanbul
This musical documentary by Fatih Akin is an energetic and personal ode to the city, its musicians and the colourful identity of Istanbul.
German musician Alexander Hacke travels through Istanbul and, together with the viewer, discovers the city's enormous musical diversity. From traditional Turkish music and Kurdish sounds to rock, hip hop, rap and electronic music: different generations and cultures come together. Akin shows Istanbul as a city that is constantly changing and in which music forms an important bridge between past and present, East and West. Fatih Akin (1973) is the most prominent German-Turkish director of the moment. He made his international breakthrough with his fierce and moving drama ‘Gegen die Wand’ (2004). In his films, Akin combines raw realism with humour, music and strong emotions, in which identity, background, love, family and the search for a place between different cultures play an important role.
