The fight for safer streets
In the United States, cycling safely through the city is not a given, unlike in the Netherlands. On May 18, 2021, teacher Matthew Jensen died on McGuinness Boulevard in Brooklyn, New York, after being struck by a car. This tragic incident led to a major citizens' movement aimed at making McGuinness Boulevard safer. The main proposed change was reducing the four lanes to two, with the addition of protected bike paths.
Activism for urban improvement
The documentary 'Changing Lanes' portrays the struggle between urban planning and politics. The film uses archival footage and short interviews with local residents, politicians, activists, urban planners, and public figures. Among them are Janette Sadik-Khan, former New York City Commissioner of Traffic, and David Byrne of Talking Heads. Ben Wolf's documentary shows how activism can contribute to making a city safer, thereby serving as an example for other places in the country.
