Afrovibes Festival: Space of Becoming

Experience the premiere of the latest performance by Sites of Memory during Afrovibes Festival, amidst the art at Fenix. Dance, visual arts, music, and spoken word about colonial legacies and new connections.

Among the art

During Space of Becoming, you are not seated in a theater hall, but walk with the performers through Fenix. Along the way, you see scenes featuring dance, music, visuals, and spoken word, including those accompanying The Sun by Ugo Rondinone, an 18th-century Coromandel cabinet from Sri Lanka, and the tapestry Rampie and Layer II by Thania Petersen.

Multiple performers demonstrate how colonial power relations still impact people's lives. They bring their own languages, memories, artistic traditions, and perspectives, and search for what connects people.

Practical information

Space of Becoming performs on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4 at 12:30 and 15:30. Please register at the welcome desk in Fenix before the performance begins. The performance lasts approximately 60 minutes and follows a fixed, wheelchair-accessible route through the exhibition Alle Richtingen naar Plein. The performance contains no intense images or loud noises.

About the organizations

Space of Becoming is an international collaboration between Sites of Memory, DOX from the Netherlands, nATANDA Dance Theatre from Sri Lanka, and Camissa Create from South Africa.

Afrovibes Festival presents contemporary dance, theatre, and music by creators from Africa and the African diaspora. The 2026 edition is dedicated to Soil (Soul) and explores the meaning of land, origin, memory, and connectedness.

Sites of Memory creates site-specific performances about shared cultural heritage and hidden or underrepresented stories from the Netherlands and the former colonies. The foundation was established in 2016 by cultural historian Jennifer Tosch and theatre maker and programmer Katy Stree.
