AFFR - The Masters: Stefano Baisi

Stefano Baisi trained as an architect but has, in recent years, become one of the most sought-after production designers in the contemporary film world. After years of working with Luca Guadagnino at his architecture and interior design firm, Baisi made his film debut in 2024 as the production designer for the film Queer, starring Daniel Craig (James Bond). His background as an architect always remains the foundation: spaces play a pivotal role in the story, and the materials, lighting, proportions, and atmosphere he chooses all convey something about a character's personality. For Queer, he therefore recreated the gritty Mexico City of the 1950s in the Cinecittà film studio, serving as a fitting world for the film's protagonist, who is both searching and sensual. About the AFFR Masters At AFFR, Baisi will be in conversation with Thierry Somers, editor-in-chief of BNI magazine NOOK, to discuss the relationship between architecture and film, his collaboration with Guadagnino – also the director of Call Me by Your Name and I Am Love, among others – and how to create spaces that may exist only for the camera, but which simultaneously help the actors fully immerse themselves in their roles.
