Akira Kurosawa reinterpreted Shakespeare's King Lear filming it as an historical epic set in 16th-century Japan. Tatsuya Nakadai plays the aging warlord Hidetora Ichimonji, whose decision to split his kingdom between his sons leads to treason, destruction and madness.
