Love-22-Love is an ode to love, art, and darkness. For director and video and installation artist Jeroen Kooijmans, creating art is his raison d’être, but it sometimes drives him to deep despair. The images in which he films himself as he becomes entangled in a psychotic episode are incredibly raw. In this intimate documentary, Kooijmans reconstructs the period leading up to these moments and the long journey that followed, using only personal archival material from himself and his beloved. Above all, Love-22-Love is a declaration of love to his wife, artist Elspeth Diederix, his anchor in life and the light at the end of his tunnel. The film shows how love, art, and the dark corners of the psyche converge, leaving room for doubt, struggle, and ultimately insight. After 33 years, the period the film covers, an answer unfolds to the question of how love and art can sustain and heal a life.
