AFFR screens Universal Language during Rotterdam Architecture Month
Especially for Rotterdam Architecture Month, AFFR presents the exclusive pre-premiere of Universal Language on Friday 20 June. An absurdist film by Matthew Rankin that is already being tipped as a future cult classic. The film takes place at Festivalhart Schiemond and starts at 20:00. Tickets cost €8 and are available via this link.
In the film, the Canadian city of Winnipeg is Persian. From that idea, a dryly comic, moving and surprising story unfolds. The film follows two young girls who try to pry loose frozen note money, a guide who shows a bored group of tourists around the city's dullest spots and a civil servant who gets hopelessly lost in his own hometown.
Universal Language is a film that makes you think about the importance of language, community and culture. The film is not only very entertaining but also moving won the audience award at Cannes.
25th anniversary of AFFR
The screening of Universal Language is a preview of AFFR's anniversary edition, from 8 to 12 October, at LantarenVenster and Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg. AFFR - then called Architectuur Film Festival Rotterdam - was first initiated in 2000. The festival looks back and forward. With retrospectives, debates and classics, but also with immersive media, current themes and a revamped website.
