Workshop: Coiling Textures with Rein Reitsma

Coiling Textures is the second installment in this workshop series. Artist Rein Reitsma introduces us to the intricate craft of coiling. Together, we'll create chairs for the exhibition space!

About Rein Reitsma

Artist Rein Reitsma works at the intersection of product design and art, presenting unusual, colorful objects. From ready-made pieces to commissioned products, his work is playful, easy to understand, and brings a smile to your face.

By mixing materials and bending the rules, he reimagines craft and tradition. A beautiful quilt made from shirts, baskets from packing straps, a hand-woven QR code, a flying raincoat—to name just a few. But Rein often returns to a few basic principles: weaving, rolling, knotting, and creating ready-mades. This unique way of working made Rein a proud member of the @basketclub from an early age.

Under the guidance of artist-designer Yara Valente, we are preparing to build the new space where our anarchive will be stored and exhibited.

Given Little Red Riding Hood's DIT attitude, our vibrant community, and the collectivity inherent in the concept of our anarchive, Yara was convinced that part of the design for the exhibition space needed to be created collaboratively. The base layer of her design consists of everything physically needed to display the anarchive. The second layer is called the texture layer, which complements the base, making it soft and personal. While the base is the skeleton, the texture is the skin. The final layer is the activation of the entire space.

Yara loves color; it's one of the things that draws her to Little Red Riding Hood: that we are colorful too. Our logo evokes a sense of transparency, which aligns with her perspective on the anarchive. The texture isn't finished once the space is built; you can always keep adding to it. Yara's design has three elements she wants to create collectively—that is, together with YOU!
