When The Light Breaks

When The Light Breaks follows art student Una, who struggles with loss, hidden truths and her place within a grieving group of friends after a tragic tunnel fire. Featuring breathtaking images of Iceland.

Art student Una is in a secret relationship with Diddi and they dream of a future together. But before that is possible, Diddi must first end his relationship with his official girlfriend. On the way to her, the unthinkable happens: Diddi dies in a devastating tunnel fire that leaves many dead. Una searches for her place within her group of friends while memories of Diddi surface, and tensions arise due to hidden truths and shared grief.

When The Light Breaks is an intimate and poignant drama by award-winning Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson, known for Volcano and Sparrows . With a keen eye for emotion and nuance, Rúnarsson explores how people deal with grief, love and loss in different ways. He shows that grief can look different for everyone and gives space to everyone's feelings.

With cinematography by Sophia Olsson, who masterfully captures the breathtaking Icelandic landscapes, the visual aspect becomes a major player in the film. When The Light Breaks was the opening film of the Un Certain Regard program of the Cannes Film Festival and has already received several awards.
