Come enjoy a breakfast together and listen to "The Voice of Beaver." Fenix is participating in the National Reading Breakfast during the National Reading Days. Enjoy breakfast at Plein while Henna Goudzand reads "The Voice of Beaver" to Nahar. This picture book is written for children aged 4 and up. The breakfast buffet is provided by the Mano Foundation and includes coffee and tea.

Reading days at Fenix

During National Reading Days (January 21st to February 1st), the focus is on reading aloud to young children (ages 0-6). Reading aloud helps children discover new words, understand stories better, and empathize with others. At Fenix, we celebrate this with reading sessions at Plein, and our exhibition offers a historical look at the theme of migration in 20th-century children's books.

About The Voice of Beaver

Henna Goudzand Nahar reads from her picture book "The Voice of Beaver." Elephant and Pig have been friends for years. One day, Beaver comes to live with them, in a beautiful spot by the river. But Elephant and Pig don't want Beaver to live there, because he's a stranger. No matter how hard Beaver tries, Elephant and Pig send him away.

When Beaver leaves, Elephant and Pig can't understand why they remain so sad. Was it wrong to send Beaver away? They regret what they did and ask Beaver to come back. Together they build a house for Beaver and become the best of friends.

About the Mano Foundation

For the reading breakfast, we're collaborating with the Mano Foundation. This foundation encourages Rotterdam residents to participate in society. They give people the opportunity to discover and utilize their talents. Their programs are geared towards children, young people, newcomers, refugees, and others who may find their way more challenging.

Reading books in the exhibition

This month, Fenix is celebrating National Reading Days. The "All Directions" exhibition features a selection of international books for reading aloud, from "Ludwig: The Little Emigrant" (1834) to "Princess Arabella" (2020). These books take you on a journey through time and show how stories about migration have been told to children throughout the years.
