'Before Retirement' shows a family completely stuck in the past: a former SS officer, his sisters, a house full of macabre memories. The play is set in the days around Himmler's birthday, an uncomfortable moment of secret celebration and suppressed tension.
Bernhard's black humor and sharp dialogues make this performance more than a grim portrait. It is a confrontational, but also absurdly comical view of human weakness and the clinging to old ideals.
