Voices from Letters: Kiminá - Vernon Chatlein Caribbean Day
Unravel the secrets of Curacao's most iconic music genre: Tambú with Afro-Caribbean percussionist Vernon Chatlein.
Kimina is a performance in which Tambú; the music, dance, storytelling and spirituality are central. It is the third performance in the series of screenings of Chatlein's research & performance platform Voices From Letters, in which he translates traditional music to the contemporary.
Tambú originated when enslaved Africans on Curacao combined their various African musical traditions. It originally tells about life on the plantation, through dance and song with various drum rhythms.
Although Tambú, both as a music and a way of life, was formed centuries ago, it is still very much alive in today's Caribbean community.
Voices from Letters: Kimina will be a presentation of Chatlein's discoveries and research around Tambú. He collaborated with his great friend and choreographer Remses Rafaela. Together they search for new forms in Tambú that preserve the codes and tradition but in a certain sense also seek out the extremes.
