Tweedehands Kind | Mulu Glas
How do you keep fighting when you feel like you're worthless?
In this show of Mulu's story, the rapper has done artistic research into his own way of storytelling. Mulu was born in Ethiopia, abandoned on the streets and adopted by parents in a village in East Groningen. After they have passed a few intake interviews, filled in a wish list and transferred 20,000 euros, Mulu is brought to the Netherlands. But growing up is not easy for Mulu. At school, Mulu has trouble keeping up. A test shows that he has an IQ of 75. Label after label is stuck on his chest. He spends more time in the hallway with some others than in a classroom. Hanging out in the hallway quickly translates into hanging out on
street. That includes a first cigarette, a first joint, the first alcohol. Grown-up village youth curse him: "Dirty cunt! Go back to your own country."
Things are going from bad to worse. Mulu becomes one of the 30,000 OTS youth in the Netherlands. Which stands for Under Supervision. Youth care, juvenile detention, addiction care, social work. A lot of back and forth from many cupboards to many walls. Many offices in between with many gentlemen in suits making decisions. Based on a file, not on a life, a person of flesh and blood, a person with feelings.
