Classic music for everyone, come as you are and pay what you can at the end of the concert.
Welcome to this special chamber music concert, where melancholy and intensity meet in two monumental octets by Franz Schubert and Paul Hindemith. Nine top musicians bring these works to life in a programme that is both grand and intimate – a celebration of musicality, expression and a nod to the seriousness of existence.
Schubert's Octet in F, written in 1824, is a masterpiece bursting with lyricism, drama and Viennese charm. Despite his illness, Schubert managed to create a rare balance between light and dark – a deeply moving work full of joie de vivre.
Hindemith's Octet, written more than a century later in 1958, forms a powerful contrast. With sharp lines, personal emotion and a surprisingly dark sound world, Hindemith gives a unique twist to the same instrumentation. His viola – his beloved instrument – plays a leading role here, with a final movement full of challenging irony.
