Thelma

The directorial debut of Josh Margolin, Thelma is a moving action comedy starring Oscar-nominated veteran June Squibb (Nebraska) in her first leading role and groundbreaking actor Richard Roundtree (Shaft) in his final role. Squibb, who did many of her stunts in the film herself, plays Thelma Post, a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who is scammed over the phone by someone pretending to be her grandson (Fred Hechinger, The White Lotus). She embarks on a dangerous quest through Los Angeles, accompanied by an elderly friend (Roundtree) and his mobility scooter, to get back what she was cheated of. Parker Posey, Clark Gregg and Malcolm McDowell also star. Margolin, a seasoned improvisational comedian, has a keen eye for the rhythm of the daily life of a ninety-year-old. The film, which premiered at Sundance, is an ode to his real grandmother Thelma. Her on-screen character sparkles with humor, wonder, and stubbornness, all clearly rooted in love for his grandmother.
