Louise works as a waitress in a diner and has problems with her boyfriend Jimmy, who is always on the road as a musician. Thelma is married to Darryl, who prefers his wife to stay quiet in the kitchen so he can watch football on TV. One day they decide to leave their normal lives behind, get in the car and hit the road. However, their journey turns into flight when Louise kills a man who threatens and tries to rape Thelma. They decide to go to Mexico, but they are soon chased by the American police.
