The Devils 1971
Heavily censored in 1971, now to be seen in 4K as Ken Russell intended it. When an obsessed nun accuses the proud priest Grandier of witchcraft, his enemies seize their chance.
In 1971, The Devils by Ken Russell was so intense that the censors and the studio cut it heavily: two complete scenes disappeared and much other material was shortened. More than fifty years later, the film can finally be seen as Russell intended. The new 4K restoration was made based on the original camera negative and follows the version that was reconstructed in 2004 under the supervision of Russell and his editor Michael Bradsell. The sound has also been remastered, from the original 35mm magnetic tape. The result: the uncensored The Devils, officially on the big screen for the first time.
France, 17th century. Father Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed) is a beloved but proud priest in the town of Loudun. He stands in the way of the central power, which wants to strip the city of its independence. When Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave) develops an obsessive, erotic fixation on him and he rejects her, her desire turns into hysteria. She accuses Grandier of witchcraft, and for his enemies, that is exactly the opportunity they have been waiting for.
