The beach

a performance about the beach as a social space full of tensions between relaxation and vulnerability, audience and intimacy. Thirteen young performers spend a day on the beach: a place where bodies are shown and judged, where young people seek their place in a hierarchy of beauty and popularity.

The beach, one of the most visited holiday destinations, a popular social space and a place for play, relaxation, seduction, eroticism, encounter, full of codes, scripts and rituals. The beach, an environment of (semi)naked bodies, water, exposure to the sun and to the gaze of others. The beach, both touching and cruel. Everyone is equal before the laws of the sea, the sand and the waves, but at the same time there is a hierarchy of the most beautiful, the thinnest, the most muscular, the most popular, especially among the young.

We follow thirteen young performers to the beach for a day, to stay there for a short or long time. They pass by in duos, groups or alone, with friends, family or strangers. On the beach there is a strange tension between rest and action, between the public and the intimate.

the beach is an invitation to get to know the young performers better. What lies beneath their slightly sunburned skin? The script for the performance was written by young people. For months, they met weekly in hetpaleis for conversations with each other, with friends and with peers. The result is a text that is both vulnerable and humorous.

the beach is a production by hetpaleis and multidisciplinary artist Sarah Vanhee, a performance with and by young people about sexuality, desire and physicality.
