Sylvie Fleury

In the spring of 2024, Kunsthal Rotterdam will present a major overview of the Swiss artist Sylvie Fleury (1961, Geneva). Her provocative installations, sculptures, readymades and paintings can be seen in the Netherlands for the first time. Fleury playfully challenges gender stereotypes. She uses modern advertising strategies such as attention-grabbing slogans, brightly colored neon lights and seductive presentations, exploring the boundaries between contemporary art and consumerism. With elements from the fashion and film world, pop culture, motorsport and art history, Fleury creates unexpected new stories again and again, always with a good dose of humor and idiosyncrasy!

Sylvie Fleury broke through in the 1990s with her ironic presentations of glamour, fashion and lifestyle. She follows the latest trends, faithfully reads the major fashion magazines and never misses a single couture show in Paris. In her work, as a fashion victim, she responds to the overwhelming influence of the fashion industry by elevating elements from that world to art. In the exhibition you move between designer articles, Vogue covers and neon installations with slogans such as “Champagne & Limousines”. By placing luxury goods and their seductive sales strategies in a different context, Fleury makes us aware of the similarities between consumer society and the art world.
