Sun-Mi Hong, a South Korean-born, Amsterdam-based musician, is one of the most innovative drummers and composers of her generation. She continually pushes the boundaries of jazz, effortlessly integrating influences from diverse musical traditions. Her upcoming album, the second release on Edition Records after Third Page: Resonance with her quintet, demonstrates her exceptional talent for weaving complex compositions with the boundless freedom of improvisation. Scheduled for release in March 2025, this work underscores her unparalleled creative vision and groundbreaking artistry.

Founded in 2016, the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet emerged from Hong’s search for self-expression while navigating the complexities of adapting to a new cultural landscape in the Netherlands. Hong chose her quintet for their empathetic and diverse personalities, finding musicians who supported her search for a new sense of belonging while navigating the challenges of a new cultural environment. The ensemble consists of Nicolò Ricci on tenor saxophone, Alistair Payne on trumpet, Chaerin Im on piano, and Alessandro Fongaro on bass.

The album captures the quintet’s collective experiences and emotions during its creation, with themes of melancholy and innocence influenced by Hong’s South Korean heritage and personal life.
