Staples Jr. Singers

A unique opportunity for lovers of soul and truly authentic Black Gospel music: the Staples Jr. Singers will grace BIRD's stage this summer during their European tour. The family, now with three generations of musicians, has been breathing Gospel and Soul since the seventies. Bless your ears and take this opportunity to witness an indispensable piece of musical heritage.

In the small American village of Aberdeen in Mississippi in 1975, Edward, Annie and RC Brown recorded their first and then only album as teenagers: 'When Do We Get Paid' (later re-released by Luaka Bop 2022). Influenced by life around them in a troubled American South during the civil rights movement, the Staples Jr. Singer's music that touches, born from family, faith, community and a call for social justice. “All the songs we were singing about, We were going through it”.

What started as pressing and selling their own records, touring in the family bus on days off to share their music, developed into bringing their soulful voice to festivals such as North Sea Jazz and Le Guess Who, Jazz à Vienne, WOMAD and Haldern Pop. Now, after more than 50 years, they are recording their second, full-length album "Searching". This year we will taste the fruits of that on July 6 in BIRD. For the love of soul and gospel, The Staple Jr. Singers and their story, rooted in the heart of gospel and soul, must be heard live.
