Stadsmuziek Tuinconcert Stadhuis Rotterdam

City carillonneur Richard de Waardt sits at a height of 65 meters and plays the 63 bells of the mighty carillon of the city hall tower. It can be seen on a screen in the listening garden. Richard plays music by Mozart and Chopin, among others. He also plays music composed by his predecessors Leen 't Hart and Ferdinand Timmermans, two legendary city carillonneurs of Rotterdam. The tower music alternates with chamber music in the garden by musicians from the Dordts Chamber Orchestra led by Eric de Waardt, who played as a viola player with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC for 36 years. Eric is now back in his homeland and plays beautiful chamber music for string quartet by Beethoven, Dvořák and Webern, among others, with his colleagues from the Dordrecht Chamber Orchestra.

100-year Rotterdam tradition

The garden opens from 7 p.m. and then you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee of your choice in the central hall of the town hall (coffee bar closes at the start of the concert). The garden is accessible via the side entrances along Doelwater and Stadhuisstraat. Chairs are provided and there are listening benches in the garden. You are of course also welcome to bring your own chair. Carillon concerts in the garden of the city hall are a Rotterdam tradition that dates back to 1916. Exactly 100 years later, in 2016, we revived the garden concerts around the Rotterdam carillons. We hope for a large turnout again this year, so that we can make the summer evening concerts a real Rotterdam tradition again!
