Stadsmuziek Tuinconcert Stadhuis Rotterdam

Carillonneur Frank Steijns sits at a height of 65 meters and plays the 63 bells of the mighty carillon of the town hall tower. It can be seen on a screen in the listening garden. Steijns is the carillonneur of Maastricht, Heerlen and Weert. He has also been first violinist in Andre Rieu's Johann Strauss Orchestra for about thirty years. Since 2015 he has been the pianist of the Maastricht Salon Orchestra. He was appointed city composer of Maastricht for the period 2023-2024. He twice bought a mobile carillon (the first was stolen by bronze thieves) with which he traveled more than 300,000 kilometers around the world, including in collaboration with the Rieu orchestra. Steijns is a virtuoso on the bells and an entertainer par excellence, so be surprised!

The tower music is alternated by the Manebrandt ensemble. For city carillonneur Richard de Waardt, the carillon is not all that matters. He also has a great love for a more portable instrument: the accordion. Tonight he will give up the tower to colleague Frank Steijns and play with his ensemble Manebrandt in the garden of the town hall. Manebrandt plays music without boundaries and with a heartbeat. This quartet plays unique compositions seasoned with a touch of jazz, a touch of classical, a pinch of folk, a touch of world music, a dash of improvisation and a large dose of love for music. Manebrandt is Roel Fran├žois (guitar), Frederika Mareels (double bass), Dina Verheyden (vocals/clarinet) and Richard de Waardt (accordion).

100-year Rotterdam tradition

The garden opens from 7 p.m. and then you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee of your choice in the central hall of the town hall (coffee bar closes at the start of the concert) . The garden is accessible via the side entrances along Doelwater and Stadhuisstraat. Chairs are provided and there are listening benches in the garden. You are of course also welcome to bring your own chair. Carillon concerts in the garden of the city hall are a Rotterdam tradition that dates back to 1916. Exactly 100 years later, in 2016, we revived the garden concerts around the Rotterdam carillons. We hope for a large turnout again this year, so that we can make the summer evening concerts a real Rotterdam tradition again!
