SITP X WORM X NSRT: Pietre Artist in Focus 2024

'Pietre' is the latest project by bassist and composer Alessandro Fongaro (Artist in Focus 2024). 'Pietre' is the Italian word for stones, which Fongaro refers to as 'feelings'. The themes of the compositions portray specific images and moments, all somewhat related to love and friendship, which Fongaro carefully collected as a kind of personal diary. The music is a combination of faltering rhythms, improvisation and melodies. In a raw yet romantic way, the ensemble executes such themes, creating a dialogue that shows intensity, sensitivity and vulnerability in play, taking opportunities and risks to shape their story.

“Alessandro Fongaro's 'Pietre' is one of the most beautiful new young jazz groups (…) With his rich tone he has a story to tell on which the others comment. The role of drummer Sun-Mi Hong cannot be underestimated. Hong can play fierce drums and manipulate the music to her will, but here we heard a different Hong, who kept adding little surprises with subtle accents and thus lifted the music to a higher level.” – Tom Beetz, jazznu.com

'Pietre' consists of Alessandro Fongaro on double bass, Sun-Mi Hong on drums, Jesse Schilderink on baritone and tenor saxophone and Nicolò Ricci on tenor saxophone. “First time (a)live.” is the band's debut album, which was released independently in 2022. The album was very well received by the public and the press and the ensemble had the opportunity to present the music, including at: North Sea Jazz Festival, BIMHUIS, De Doelen, Injazz, Ham Sessions Ghent, Stadtgarten Köln, De Ruimte etc. “[…] with his project 'Pietre', he proves to be one of the most prominent musicians of the current jazz generation in The Netherlands” (Benjamin Herman on NPO Radio2)
