Shantie Singh Boekpresentatie: Na de komma

Rotterdam author Shantie Singh celebrates her latest work with a catwalk show. Her book is a personal plea for more recognition and visibility of the Hindustani story in the Netherlands. This afternoon she literally shines the light on the pioneers, fighters and feminists from the Hindustani community. This community and their story, which has been invisible for (too) long, is given plenty of space on a 10-meter-long catwalk. With afterwards: afterparty!

About After the comma

When apologizing for the history of slavery, the Dutch government used a comma, not a period. Yes, slavery was abolished more than 150 years ago, but the recruitment of indentured servants from British India, among others, as a replacement immediately began. What happened in Suriname after the history of slavery should not be forgotten. The first ship with contract workers arrived in Suriname on June 5, 1873, also more than 150 years ago. In her book, Shantie Singh shows how the colonial mentality persisted at the time, and how it continues to affect the Hindustanis in the Netherlands to this day.
