Science on Tap #2 - From catcall to call for change

This edition, PhD candidate Charlotte van Tuijl (Erasmus University Rotterdam) dives into the complex question behind street harassment: How can we better understand the young people who commit it - and what drives their behavior - so we can design prevention that truly works?

Charlotte's research focuses on youth participation: working with young people instead of only about them. By engaging them directly in the research process, she explores what lies beneath acts of sexual street harassment and how a deeper understanding can lead to more effective, long-term prevention.

Her approach challenges the usual narrative. Instead of symptom-fixing or victim-blaming, Charlotte shifts the focus toward empathy, insight and responsibility by echoing the familiar call to action: “Educate your sons.” It's a fresh, necessary perspective that's rarely heard in public debate.
