Rum and Coca Cola - première Izaline Calister
An evening full of musical richness that brings history to life. Enjoy tropical rhythms and moving stories about a hidden past.
An old songbook from her father's inheritance aroused the curiosity of singer Izaline Calister. It contained songs from the Caribbean during World War II that she knew, but knew nothing about. What happened during WWII in the West?
She discovered stories about German submarines, oil refineries and American armies. Despite fear and chaos, people continued to sing and dance to calypso, tumba and reggae. The American soldiers brought their films and songs, which the Caribbean population enjoyed. But there was also criticism of their presence, as can be heard in the protest song Rum and Coca Cola. Izaline's warm voice takes you straight back in time. NRC already wrote: "This tumba queen sang compellingly... and made her ode passionate." Don't miss it.
