During Rotterdam Pride, the Maritime Museum Rotterdam dives into the stories of the queer community on and around the water. On Saturday, September 26, the museum will be dedicated to pride in diversity and hidden maritime histories. From readings by drag queen Gigi and building their own Pride boat to presentations on homosexuality within the VOC and a book launch about one hundred queer maritime figures.

Activities during Rotterdam Pride

During Rotterdam Pride, the Maritime Museum Rotterdam dives into the stories of the queer community. Drag queen Gigi reads maritime stories to young visitors in the museum library. You can also design and build your own Pride boat aboard the museum ship Geertruida. Using various materials, you can create a colorful ship.

For seniors, there are boat tours through Rotterdam's Maritime District. These tours offer a different perspective on the history and surroundings from the water. The Maritime Museum Rotterdam collaborates with 'Handen van Humanitas' for this purpose.

Queer history at sea

Lesser-known stories from maritime history are given a platform. Researcher Desley van der Graaf discusses homosexuality aboard VOC ships, including the historical context of relationships and sexual diversity. The short film screening 'Zee van Ruimte' features men sharing their experiences aboard the SS Rotterdam. Excerpts from the documentary 'Achter de Golven' by Tomas Ponsteen, who researches queer sailors, are also shown.
