Rotterdam Ekiden
The Rotterdam Ekiden is a relay marathon. Six people form a team where each team member runs their own distance. The distances are in starting order; 5km - 10km - 5km - 10km - 5km - 7.195km. A total of 42.195 km is covered, the classic marathon distance!
The team feeling is unique to the event. Regular running events are individual, during the Ekiden it's all about your entire team. The finishing time of the marathon is determined by adding all the times of the group together.
In the meantime, the organization creates a festival atmosphere during the event. The regular resident DJ Hans Vogel plays on the ''main stage'' and there are various food trucks on the site.
The Ekiden is originally a Japanese relay race. Eki means "place" and Den stands for "delivery". In earlier times, important documents in Japan were transported quickly from one place to another by various runners. The Ekiden sporting event is based on this classic courier service. The package of documents is symbolized by a sash, the Tasuki.
