Rajae El Mouhandiz
Gnawa rhythms, Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Islamic mysticism. John Coltrane's iconic album 'A Love Supreme' was the starting point for Rajae El Mouhandiz' spiritual journey.
A Love Supreme is a musical and spiritual journey by Rajae El Mouhandiz, inspired by John Coltrane's iconic jazz album and the Moroccan Gnawa tradition. From her North African and Islamic background, she explores the surprising connections between these worlds, with a focus on Islamic spirituality.
Both musical styles use the pentatonic scale and trance-inducing rhythms. Coltrane's repetitive bass lines strongly resemble the sound of the guembri, the traditional Gnawa instrument. This creates a natural bridge between spiritual jazz and Sufi-inspired music.
The performance travels from New York to Tangier and Rotterdam, along jazz clubs and rituals, with new compositions by Rajae and contributions from musicians, thinkers and scientists. A Love Supreme is an ode to the connecting power of music and mysticism. It invites you to listen, feel and discover — for everyone who is open to intercultural dialogue and the spiritual depth of music.
