RAIZ Samir Calixto

Originally trained as a classical singer, choreographer Samir Calixto is known for the idiosyncratic way in which he takes iconic works from Western music history as inspiration for compelling dance performances. What is less well known is that for Samir himself, this work is always in dialogue with his Brazilian origins and heritage. As a small child, he grew up participating in Afro rituals in which music and movement were used to reconnect people with their deepest origins. It was in these 'seances' that many of his roots lie. A wealth of rhythms and sounds coupled with a specific sense of urgency entered his life and contributed decisively to the formation of his artistic identity.
