Première: Hunters in the Snow o.l.v. Alessandro Fongaro

Photography has been an integral part of Fongaro's research, behind the creation of his dream project 'Hunters in the Snow'. The photographic practice also unraveled a new perspective on his compositions in relation to the story of a work of art. This new interest led him to the work of master photographers such as Giacomelli, Scianna, Koudelka, Brandt and Silverthorne, as well as the work of film directors such as Andrei Tarkovsky and Béla Tarr, whose ability to use photographic composition and music as elements to shape their stories . The use of Bach's themes in Tarkovsky's films inspired Alessandro to look again at the work of great classical composers. He focused on discovering a personal perspective on the core of their musical narratives.

The title 'Hunters in the Snow' comes from a painting by the Dutch Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel. The painting shows a group of hunters entering the village after a hunt, while the residents are busy with their daily tasks. The scene takes place in an environment that is not really representative of the Netherlands, as high snow-capped peaks are shown in the distance. All the elements depicted in this painting (the hunters, the mountains, the villagers and so on) remind Fongaro of memories he has from his childhood, and the fact that it was painted by a Dutch artist seems to him a perfect symbolization of his journey to rediscover a 'home' from far away, the Netherlands.

As for the line-up of his dream project, Fongaro said: “I have been very fortunate to be able to bring together a group of musicians who are all incredibly sensitive and committed to making music in an honest and personal way. This group consists of musicians I have worked with for a long time, as well as some new and extremely inspiring connections. I could not feel a greater honor to welcome this ensemble'.

'Hunters in the Snow' will premiere at Cinerama on June 27, with a specially selected ensemble consisting of George Dumitriu (violin), Yanna Pelser (viola), Pablo Rodriguez (violin), Thomas van Geelen (cello), Nicolò Ricci ( saxophone), Marta Warelis (piano), Jim Black (drums) and Fongaro himself (double bass & composition).
