Our Land
With Our Land, Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel delves deep into a case that exposes Latin America's colonial legacy. Through the murder trial, personal testimonies, and the daily reality of the community, a gripping story of land grabbing, power, and resistance unfolds.
Northern Argentina, 2009. When businessman Dario Amín, accompanied by two armed accomplices, attempts to drive a group of three hundred members of the indigenous Chuschagasta community off their land, the confrontation ends in tragedy. Community leader Javier Chocobar is shot dead. The murder is captured on camera, but despite this irrefutable evidence, it takes another nine years of protest and resistance before the case comes to court.
For Amín, it is about property and economic interests. For the Chuschagasta, much more is at stake: their history, their identity, and their right to exist on the land they have inhabited for generations.
Martel worked on this documentary for fourteen years and delivers a film that is simultaneously a compelling true-crime narrative, a political indictment, and an overwhelming sensory experience. Internationally acclaimed following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and awarded at festivals including the Locarno Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, Our Land is a poignant portrait of a community that refuses to disappear.
