Or Bareket Quartet

Double bassist Or Bareket returns to LantarenVenster. Bareket is currently one of the most sought-after and versatile young bassists in the New York jazz scene. Born in Jerusalem and raised in Buenos-Aires and Tel-Aviv, Or won first prize at the International Society of Bassists' jazz competition in 2011. His mixed heritage is clearly present in his playing. His approach to improvisation is informed by Mediterranean, Latin American and North African folklore, interpreted through his long study of the American jazz tradition.

Or's strong debut album OB1 was released in 2017. This autumn, the German quality label Enja Records will release Or's fourth album, entitled YŌM, which means 'day' in Hebrew and Arabic. It is the successor to the critically acclaimed album Sahar (2022). It reflects and contrasts with the introspective, often dream-like atmosphere of the previous album and addresses themes inspired by light, warmth and color. Offering Bareket's most energetic, captivating and sharp statement to date, YŌM continues the quartet's evolution by creating a unique, dynamic and expansive sound palette.

On stage, the bassist always surrounds himself with other top talents from the New York scene, such as saxophonist Godwin Louis and drummer Savannah Harris. The quartet is a container for the continuous exploration of spaces between and within languages and cultures. Savannah Harris describes the quartet's style as a musical equivalent of capoeira: the Afro-Brazilian martial art/dance form in which people appear to spar and dance at the same time. A concert by the Or Bareket quartet is a great opportunity to see a top formation in the making!
