From a sense of urgency regarding our human rights and our climate, the concept of transformation is explored through three exhibitions at Garage Rotterdam, under the title How to live together.
The first exhibition in this series, Unknown Landscapes, whose title refers to Monali Meher’s installation Unknown Landscape, explores the concept of ‘repair’. Interpreted through the lens of philosopher Eva von Redecker, this exhibition examines repair as the opposite of ‘revolution’. While both suggest transformation, repair is not about a radical rupture, but rather a change that creates the new, through and out of the interstices of the old. A restorative gaze is not about a technological fix or an uncritical return to a past, but about acknowledging a damaged or broken social, cultural or ecological context. How can art contribute to a new ‘grammar’ or understanding of existence? How can we find new meanings in what has been repaired? The exhibition Unknown Landscapes addresses a state of brokenness, connecting damage and repair to care and transformation.
