For the opening of AFFR 2026, we travel to Tokyo. You will see the Dutch premiere of 'Numakage Public Pool' by Shingo Ota. This is a portrait of a beloved public swimming pool. The pool has been a social hub in Numakage, a suburb of Tokyo, for nearly 50 years. As the area is being redeveloped, the pool will be demolished.
Protest and solidarity
Director Shingo Ota pays tribute to this building and its role in the lives of many people. Parents, employees, neighbors, and the local gay community are protesting en masse against the demolition. The film depicts the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. 'Numakage Public Pool' paints a vivid picture of a unique environment.
