Oh My Jazz - Luca Warner

Voice artist Luca Warmer pays tribute to the great jazz singers by telling their story through today's eyes. Think Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington and Nina Simone. Luca wants to stir up stories about their lives, the tragedy thereof and about the call she heard in their voices to start singing jazz herself. What role did they have in creating jazz music? What is their story?

In addition to refined jazz melodies, compelling blues and heavenly gospels, we hear vocal art, poems and socially critical questions. What has actually changed in 100 years of jazz? Oh My Jazz is poetic musical theater about chasing dreams, wanting to be meaningful and unknown stories from the history of jazz.

She puts it this way: 'Already when I was in my cradle, I was surrounded by the sounds of jazz. To be able to sing like Mahalia Jackson, Carmen McRae and Rachelle Ferrell, so freely and so passionately, that seemed like the ultimate happiness to me. I've asked myself: who am I to tell this story as a white woman? Music does not care about the divisions between colors, classes, age and gender. Music does not divide or judge, music connects. The women of jazz are an indispensable key to connection.'

Luca graduated with honors from the Jazz department of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and tours the country with her own productions. In 2021 she won the Mingus Prize (Conservatorium Talent Award). After her beautiful debut performance 'Appelstroop with tears', her latest performance is an excellent opportunity to get closer to jazz music and the women who have played an important role in it. Let's s(w)ing!
