No man's land

No Man's Land is a magical-realistic and raw performance about three unborn souls who get one chance to speak to their mother - as an animal. A compelling family story about (Roma) women, oppression and the power of myth.

What if you were never born, but still see everything? In No Man's Land, three unborn souls follow their mothers – waiting for that one moment of contact. They are allowed to speak, but only as animals: as a bear, a nightingale… or as a human. What begins as a mythical game, unfolds into a heartbreaking story about three generations of (Roma) women who have been sterilized against their will. Their stories are told in powerful images, music and language – about struggle, comfort and resistance against systematic oppression. The performance shows how myths within the Roma community often offer more support than reality and thus honors the oral storytelling tradition. No Man's Land also sheds a sharp light on current themes such as homelessness and social exclusion, and invites compassion and awareness. A magical, confrontational and necessary piece by Giovanni Brand, that uses imagination as a form of resistance.
