NN North Sea Jazz Festival
NN North Sea Jazz: the festival where jazz music from the past, present, and future is presented under one roof for three days. Besides this solid jazz foundation, many genres are featured, including blues, soul, funk, hip-hop, world music, pop, and much more.
Officially known as the NN North Sea Jazz Festival since 2018, the festival has evolved into a major international event, growing over the years to include fifteen stages, approximately thirteen hundred musicians, and an annual attendance of between eighty-five and ninety thousand. Since 2006, the festival has also been held at a new and more spacious venue: Rotterdam Ahoy.
The first edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 at the Netherlands Congress Centre in The Hague. The initial numbers: six concert halls, three hundred musicians, and around nine thousand visitors. This very first festival year featured performances by jazz legends like Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Stan Getz. A comprehensive overview of the Dutch avant-garde was also presented.
