Nik Bärtsch Ronin

The special pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch returns to LantarenVenster with his group Ronin to present the new album, which will be released this year on ECM Records. Nik has now made eight albums with Ronin, the last six of which were released on the ECM label.

Bärtsch (1971) is “the scientist of groove”, according to a newspaper in Zurich, and that is an effective description of the Swiss. He studied at the Musikhochschule in Zurich and later philosophy and linguistics at the university of that city. He then spent several years in Japan. From 2001 onwards, Bärtsch became leader of his 'zen-funk' quintet Ronin. Together with drummer Kaspar Rast, he focused in workshops on the combination of music and physical movement, for example techniques such as Aikido and Gyrotonic. Repetition, reduction, seduction and interlocking rhythms characterize Nik's music. It is beautiful and unique music, in which body and mind come together.
