Mal Viver

Part of Previously Unreleased : films that were shown at important festivals at home and abroad, but were not released in Dutch cinemas.

The unique 'mirror films' Mal Viver and Viver Mal conclude this year's Previously Unreleased series. Director João Canijo started his career as an assistant director to big names Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Alain Tanner and Werner Schroeter. Last year in Berlin, Mal Viver , the first of the two films in competition, and the other, Viver Mal , were in Encounters, the Berlinale's 'second competition'.

The first part, Mal viver, focuses on five women from a family that runs a small luxury hotel and tries to save it from destruction. Viver mal plays in the same period, at the same location, but this time the focus is on the guests in the same hotel. What happens in the background in one film and is viewed with mild ridicule, forms the tragic main line in another film.

Mal Viver was the Portuguese entry for the Oscars and won the Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival (Silver Bear). The films also won several awards together, including the Golden Lady Harimaguada for best film, the most important prize of the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
