M4H IN DE MAAK - Ontwerpend onderzoek en de impact van water in M4H/Keilekwartier
We will discuss design research and decision-making regarding water-related issues in the Keilekwartier, with parties directly involved with M4H.
Water is a key issue in Rotterdam, especially in developing areas like Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H), which is vulnerable to rising water levels. Various parties are designing, researching, creating, and organizing dialogue with society. They are each, in their own way, embodying the voice and creativity of stakeholders in spatial urban development. In the development of M4H, the theme of "collectivity" is linked to challenges related to construction and housing, energy, mobility, green spaces, food, and waste. Can collectivity also be applied to climate adaptation and water management in the area?
Stakeholders are already experiencing the consequences of climate change: high water levels, downpours, and droughts are forcing a future transition in water management. In the near future, water managers will no longer be able to manage on their own, requiring collaboration with civil society organizations and businesses, as well as greater public responsibility for water issues.
The Municipality of Rotterdam and the region are already committed to improving and developing spatial and technical solutions such as storage, management, and purification, but water management will no longer be able to manage on its own in the near future. This means that water management in the Rotterdam region itself will need to collaborate much more closely with social organizations and businesses, and that society will also need to take much more responsibility and ownership for the water problems that arise with climate change.
