The visual arts from the reconstruction period have recently become the spearhead of Platform Wederopbouw Rotterdam. Just like the buildings, the works of art are still threatened with demolition or mutilation. Visual artists were already given a role in the reconstruction of the temporary shops from 1940.

Art from the war years was later sometimes removed or vilified. In 1951, the percentage scheme for government buildings was introduced, with 1.5% of the construction price being reserved for decorative decoration. Many private clients also followed this example. Work by well-known Rotterdam artists such as Louis van Roode, Gust Romijn, Dick Elffers and Wally Elenbaas can be found not only in museums, but everywhere in, on and on reconstruction buildings in Rotterdam.
