Lezing ruiming vliegtuigbom Claes de Vrieselaan

Rotterdam was bombed hundreds of times during the Second World War. The consequences of these bombings are still noticeable today, 80 years later. The bombing in the evening of October 3, 1941 is a special example of this. During that night, a house at Claes de Vrieselaan 27 was hit by an English bomb. The bomb did not explode but pierced straight through the house and came to rest deep underground. The unexploded bomb failed in 1941; to find a dud and only the damage to the property was repaired. When work was required 75 years later on the foundation of the house next to Claes de Vrieselaan 27, research first had to be done into the dud that had been left in the subsurface so long ago. This ultimately led to the decision that three buildings had to be demolished in order to remove the duds.

Joost Martens from the municipality of Rotterdam will explain during a lecture on October 17 why the demolition of the buildings was necessary and how the removal of the duds was carried out.
