A solo by Joey Calderazzo references generations of great jazz pianists, all filtered through his own energetic style and joyful touch.
Calderazzo is best known as the pianist of the Branford Marsalis Quartet. He took classical piano lessons from the age of eight, but soon discovered jazz. He was barely in his twenties when he made his reputation as the explosive pianist of the Michael Brecker Band.
Night after night he managed to blow the audience away, even after the ecstatic solos of guitarist Mike Stern and Brecker himself. After the death of Kenny Kirkland he joined Branford Marsalis' quartet and toured with his electric band Buckshot LeFonque, while working hard on a solo career.
Together with Branford, Calderazzo played on his recent acoustic duo album Songs of Mirth and Melancholy. He also recorded a masterful CD/DVD with Marsalis' quartet at the Bimhuis, Coltrane's A Love Supreme Live In Amsterdam. He has also released several albums as a solo pianist and leader of his own trio, including at Blue Note. On the album Haiku, a highlight in his career, he plays ten brilliant pieces on his own. On the trio album Live, he plays his own compositions as well as music by Keith Jarrett and Paul Motian, among others.
