Jean Cement - Schwung première

For everyone who sometimes wants to resist the world that keeps reinventing itself.

“He who wishes to remain must not stand still. Turn with time, or you shall perish…”

We are going to do things completely differently. Sometime in the Middle Ages, an unknown author wrote the tragedy of Jean Cement. As far as is known, this play has never been performed before – but Schwung is changing that this theatre season. The collective is bringing the forgotten history of Jean Cement to life for the first time: integral and unchanged, just as it was written back then. After all, everything used to be better.

Deep in the past, Jean Cement lives a routine and orderly existence. Every day the same walk, the same porridge from the same plate, the same work on the same land. How vile and rotten fate sometimes is, that higher powers command him of all people to deviate from the beaten path. But then you need the utterly stubborn Jean. No way, not for a moment. Jean freezes and refuses any change.

In vain: for the future usually pays little heed to our plans. Your old primary school is demolished, your mother passes away, you read somewhere about space debris and how terrible that is, you want to try on those snazzy green trousers, but guess what: they don't fit anymore. How long can you hold on to the familiar before the thundering world devours you body and soul?

Jean Cement is a humorous performance for anyone who occasionally wants to resist a world that constantly reinvents itself. In sounds of the past regarding themes of the present: progress, conservatism, and the human tendency to want to understand everything before it actually happens.

About Schwung Schwung (2023) is a young company comprising makers from various schools. A mix of theatre, performance, design, directing, journalism, and philosophy. There are many of them, which is actually quite unique these days. The seven-member collective was founded by Sam van Hulst and also consists of Luna Joosten, Reinout Bongers, Gina van Os Sánchez, David Roos, Noa van der Vorst, and David Westera. The seven makers work in varying combinations.
