Ever since the financial crash of 2008, we have witnessed the rise and consolidation of multiple movements and leaders described as populist. These developments are often regarded as something negative and possibly even anti-democratic. But is that necessarily the case? Can there also be a good kind of populism? And: How does it relate to illiberalism or even authoritarianism?
During this night we will watch the documentary The Specter of Populism (2024, Jürgen Schaflechner). Afterwards, we dive into the topic with a panel of experts. Should we see populism as a reaction to democracy’s broken promises, a threat to democracy, or is it inherent in each political mobilization that says to represent ‘the people’? With:
Dr. Sarah de Lange, Professor of Dutch Politics at Leiden University, and expert on Dutch politics, polarization and extremization.
Dr. Jamie van der Klaauw, Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy at Erasmus School of Philosophy, whose research focuses on democracy and representation.
Dr. Jürgen Schaflechner, filmmaker and director of the The Specter of Populism.
The Specter of Populism (2024, 52 min) features interviews with, amongst others, Jodi Dean and Chantal Mouffe shedding light on the complex theories of populist politics and their relevance to our current political landscape.
