Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell

After his parents emigrated to the US, Thiện moved from the province to Saigon, South Vietnam, where he made a living as a director of wedding photography. With exceptionally long takes, slow zooms and sparse editing, debutant Phạm Thiên immerses the viewer in Thiện's experiences. These mainly consist of apparently coincidental but no less meaningful encounters. This is, without any vagueness, slow cinema in its most daring, radical form. The director won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes festival last year with his contemplative film. After Tran An Hung's The Scent of Green Papaya, the second Vietnamese winner in thirty years.
