In Motion
Can you match the complexity of nature with digital techniques? That is the question that has been central to the art of Eelco Brand (Rotterdam, 1969) for decades. He initially started his career as a painter, but in 2003 he shifted his practice to digital media. This medium allows him to add movement to his work, and to compose a performance with 'virtual clay' like a sculptor.
His video works, in which he brings simulations of plants and growth processes to life, are characterized by flowing movements that repeat slowly and in an endlessly hypnotic rhythm. By means of computer animations and 3D modeling, he manages to create extremely detailed yet surreal nature scenes, filled with blossoming flowers or rolling landscapes. For Brand, it is a way to suggest a credible, natural reality with digital material. In HAL 6, the window of the Kunsthal, eight of his works can be seen until 10 November 2024.
