Immanuel Wilkins

All ears are focused on the new project Blues Blood by American alto saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins. Wilkins is known for his deep musicality and unique approach to improvisation. He made his international breakthrough in 2020 with his debut album Omega (Blue Note Records), which was named best jazz album of the year by The New York Times.

On Blues Blood, Wilkins explores the boundaries of contemporary jazz. The album is inspired by his youth, by the legacy of his ancestors and the bloodlines that connect them. On the album you can hear influences from blues, gospel, and avant-garde jazz. Each song tells a story, in which themes such as identity, culture, and resistance play an important role.

Wilkins is supported on Blues Blood by artists who complement him in his musical quest. The album is co-produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and features guest appearances by vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, guitarist Marvin Sewell and drummer Chris Dave. Together they create a layered sound that carries the listener along from start to finish. Listen to this musical landscape live in LantarenVenster on Saturday 18 January.
